How the Age Pension fortnightly payment cycle works

How the Age Pension fortnightly payment schedule works

Unlike many government benefits that are paid monthly, the Age Pension is paid every two weeks (fortnightly) by Services Australia (Centrelink). Your specific payment dates are personal — they are set based on when you first became eligible and do not change unless your circumstances change significantly.

🗓️ How to find your personal fortnightly payment dates

Because every recipient has their own individual payment cycle, there is no single universal calendar. The most reliable way to find your exact upcoming payment dates is to check your myGov account linked to Centrelink, the Express Plus Centrelink app or call the Centrelink older Australians line on 132 300. Your next payment dates are always displayed in your personal Centrelink dashboard.

📅 What day of the week is the Age Pension paid?

Centrelink processes Age Pension direct deposits predominantly on Wednesdays, though your individual payment day may fall on a different day depending on your personal cycle. If your scheduled payment date falls on a public holiday, Centrelink will typically process your automatic payment on the last business day before the holiday so your bank account is credited on time.

🏦 How is the Age Pension paid?

The Age Pension is paid via direct deposit into your nominated bank account, credit union account or building society account. You nominate your preferred account when you first apply, and you can update your BSB number and account number at any time through your myGov account or by calling Centrelink.

Most Australian banks — including Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac and NAB — process Centrelink direct deposits overnight, so funds are available in your bank account by early morning on your payment day. Some smaller banks or credit unions may take until later in the day to reflect the credit.

Financial planning tip: because payments arrive fortnightly rather than monthly, you receive 26 payments per year instead of 12. Align your direct debits, rent or mortgage payments and regular bills to your fortnightly cycle to make the most of your available balance and avoid shortfalls between payment dates.

Your funds remain in your bank account after each automatic payment is processed. There is no requirement to withdraw on the same day — choose a time that suits you to avoid queues at ATMs and bank branches, particularly on the days immediately after payment.

If you recently changed your bank account or BSB number, ensure Centrelink has confirmed the update before your next payment date to avoid a returned or delayed direct deposit. Allow at least one full payment cycle after updating your banking details before closing your old account.
